Being stuck.
This summer, I hiked 117 miles across the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
Alone.
With one-fourth of my summer hike behind me, I started post-holing in a snow field at the top of Breckenridge. I was neither equipped nor able to navigate it on my own. Somewhere between the trailheads at Waterton Canyon and Durango, I became stuck.
I know a little bit about sitting uncomfortably between one place and another. I have gone through many transitions in the past few years. Assessing the situation, I chose to backtrack, which ultimately ended my *first attempt* at thru-hiking the Colorado Trail.
I couldn’t help but think choosing my next step would have been easier if someone were walking with me. On the other hand, I faced the snowfield obstacle alone and calculated what to do next. Knowing I was capable and trusting my gut was a monumental mindset shift.
In 2019, I broke my back at the climbing gym. One of the things I did to move myself through that setback was walk. I stepped onto the Colorado Trail with a broken back, thinking…I can’t imagine hiking 1 mile of this trail. But I knew then, and still know today, I will complete the 486-mile Colorado Trail challenge.
I’ve come so far. That’s why I’m sending you this letter.
1. Plans change.
Change is something we can count on. Instead of avoiding or denying it, why not embrace it? Starting down one trail doesn’t dictate where you will end up. I am a writer, once a teacher, and now an entrepreneur. I am a guide, a caregiver, and always an explorer.
I found my deepest purpose when I learned to communicate with high school students. But I was an accountant for 22 years before that. Being an English teacher led to my career as a professional writer. And later as a guide for women transforming their thoughts, words, and actions. None would be possible without the other.
Life is not linear.
Using exploration, adventure, reflection, and simply being well, we can let go of who we thought we were and transform into the humans we desire to be. We are capable of growth beyond imagination.
Are you with me?
2. We’re better together.
I’m making a subtle shift now. Writing is the most powerful and transformative tool I know. If you want to know my best next steps tip, it will always be to write about what you are going through. But it’s not the only way to process the discomfort of sitting between here and there. I’ve gathered some new tools in my pack.
I want you to know that you can face what’s challenging. You can move through this. All the courage you need is inside of you. We can do this together.
I want to grow and be part of a community of women where we are seen as whole - regardless of struggle. A community where we meet each other *as is* - searching for our next steps together. Being present here would remind you of your inherent worthiness and the truth of who you are despite the obstacles or transitions you may be navigating.
Take a hand. Lend a hand.
I want to walk with you.
3. Transformation is possible.
We are guided by a compass deep inside our hearts. It is the one thing that draws us closer to confidently navigating our direction. I want to walk with you as you explore your purpose, help you find ways to bring it out in your life, and sit in the messy middle with you while you learn what next steps you will choose on your journey toward a brave heart, strong mind, and growth beyond doubt.
Think of me as your guide on the side.
4. This is just the beginning.
If you’ve been following along for a bit, you’ve watched my monthly letters evolve [now from Mailchimp to Substack]. I’m a lifelong learner; that’s something you can count on.
Over the next weeks and months, you will see changes on my website, and I will let you know about new offerings as they roll out. I’m creating a workbook to help you navigate the obstacles you might face at any life stage.
You will have the opportunity to work with me on a 1:1 basis, in community with other women - on expeditions both near and far.
To get started, simply subscribe to my Substack if you haven’t already.
Or, you might take the next step and become a paid subscriber, where you’ll receive this letter + an exclusive next steps letter each month that will help you avoid getting stuck while you navigate the space between here and where you’re headed.
5. Here you are.
Life can leave you feeling tender - yet here you are. By creating space for reflection and self-expression, you can learn to sit through the in-between times with a sense of calm and purpose. I’m here to sit with, walk with, and guide you as you navigate the messy middle of life.
This is your invitation to move from a stuck place towards freedom.
I see you. I'm with you. I’m for you.
